this page doesnt have built in alt text, and requires javascript for randomisation on reload and clicking for larger versions.
background
this is our inspiration page, for our own art. it could also be viewed as a repository of our "best" images, although its worth pointing out that that isn't the criteria the images are added here!
We spend a lot of time exploring personal webpages for artistic inpiration, and it is amazing. we also ask people on social media to share things for inspiration, and we thought we could also make our own page to share inspiring images, photos here.
Our photography webpages mostly focus on communicating and exploring certain artistic ideas, and different limitations to work around and navigate. and that is so cool! as a result, though, we do intentionally limit ourselves to what images we can and should display, in order to try and have clarity and focus a lot on the textual aspect.
The way we want to use this page is that, when we find an old image we made, we can put it on here, in like a gallery, and with other images. and then, when uploaded, we want to be able to see the images together easily, and in various, diverse contexts. we find in visual arts, changing the framing or presentation of sometihng can be just as exciting and inspiring as a whole new thing. for exmaple, different user interface colour, or navigation, or sorting.
the limitation of only sharing images we find inspiration is helpful for us, since that helps us only upload pictures that we want to , which signifcantly reduces internal stress.
Some of our inspiring photographs have art embedded in them, and unfortunately that means we cant upload them here!
or, we probably legally could, cuz its primarily our own photograph, but i don't think that is very fair to the other artists at the same time. it's not something we're comfortable doing.
also, we are embedding image descriptions into the file metadata themselves, and so there is a good chance this page may not have working alt text until we figure out a good way to copy the internal image description to work as alt text.
what is under construction
a lot of how we wish to design and optimise this page invovles making it dynamic and accessible to use, which may involve programming. We'll get there when we get there.
- create multiple layouts, meant to show pictures as well as possible on various screen sizes, with different ways of laying it out (vertical horziotnal for example)
- randomise layout either by a time interval (daily? weekly?) or on reload, including different css and colour schemes and organisation
- tag images with various specific and vague tags, maybe weighted by importance, so that we can then in the future randomly have it choose to display certain tag groups together, like, "orange", would group a lot of maybe sunsets, maybe like "edgy" to communicate vibe, "train" for subject, etc.. and then mix and match these sortings together and make it so some layouts still look random.
- maybe sort things at large by general subheadings like "location" or "date", to provide some document structure and to add storytelling. having some structure could be important (as with cateogry sorting with weighted rng) cuz it could make page more engaging rather than just appear like a random image gallery
- redesign how we handle exif tags
- let people click on images and have it display custom page that shows exif info along with the image itself
- resize some to find most important part of image; show full size on click
